  • Why is my Jewelry Turning Black?
Traditional Native American Jewelry with Silver will Oxidize and tarnish with time. This is perfectly natural and will only add to the charm and beauty of the unique piece by creating contrast to the high points. In fact the more intricate a silver piece is created with turquoise stones the more beautiful the piece will look with age. As oxidation will become visible in the valleys (low points) of the jewelry piece and higher points will remain in their original color. This overall process complements and brings out the uniqueness of each stone allowing them to shine on their own creating a beautiful effect that is highly desired and prized in Native American Jewelry. This is why it is not necessary to polish your silver piece with polisher. If you wish to buff up your piece every now and again the use of a towel or rag without polisher will do. Storing your silver piece by wrapping it in a soft cloth before placing it in an airtight bag or container will slow the oxidation process.
  • Can I fix my blackened silver?
While some believe that Native American Jewelry that has tarnished adds to the beauty and enhances the craftsmanship others would prefer to keep the Silver looking fresh. Keeping your treasure stored airtight and with relatively low humidity, regularly cleaning the jewelry with the accompanying cleaning cloth and simply wearing your silver pieces will help prevent the oxidizing process. As always use caution and consult with a jewelry professional . While Angpetu Spirit recommends the above method Angpetu Spirit does not assume responsibility for damaged jewelry resulting from self-cleaning methods. Taking your Silver treasures to your local jeweler for cleaning is always the best option. However, if you wish to clean your silver jewelry at home there are many methods posted in online forums. Given the semi-precious stone that is laid in your treasure, we find that the following method works best for Native American Silver Jewelry. To make a cleaning paste: Mix 1 tablespoon of Baking Soda not baking powder and 1 tablespoon of White Vinegar in a bowl. Use a Q-tip to apply the soft paste to the silver parts of your jewelry only. Take care to avoid applying paste to the stone as it will cause damage. Let the paste sit for 10 -15 minutes then rinse the silver part with warm water avoiding the stone area. Dry the jewelry with a soft cloth or cotton pad, for intricate detailed areas use a Q-tip or loose cotton to remove tarnish. As always use caution and consult with a jewelry professional . While Angpetu Spirit recommends the above method Angpetu Spirit does not assume responsibility for damaged jewelry resulting from self-cleaning methods.

Because each stone is hand laid and secured through traditional Native American methods each piece is unique and special. We suggest checking your stones each time you wear your jewelry piece.
